Very simple design, easy to follow. Graphics are simple but smooth.the bad outweighs the good IMO though:-levels are too similar there is hardly any variation in design of textures-rpg levelling mechanic is forced; no choice in how to develop your characters is given.-the standard tried-and-true mechanic of dodging using square movement in every other dungeon crawler has been changed so if you try to move away to take a ranged shot, or even to the side, every character takes massive damage. this is really what killed it for me. it forces the player into basically buidling only certain kinds of characters, and ranged doesn't do well since it both takes forever to reload, and you can't move away from your taget to shoot.-I can live without a storyline, or basically any interaction at all... but I woudln't do it if there was a choice between a game like this with a story (and there are plenty) and one without.. which is this one.for an indie game, it's not terrible, but very much not to my liking.. Excellent game to play, enjoy these types of games. Love the puzzles.. Great game, lots of fun for a cheap price...a little bit too easy but you must try it.. Great game. Very simple and straight forward. It doesnt let itself get bogged down by story. Just kill everything and loot everything.. A nice little gem. I enjoyed my playthrough a lot. Nice (but sparse) music and atmosphere. It gets repetative for sure but that is part of the charm here.. A lot of people call this a rip-off of Legend of Grimrock or others of that ilk. Honestly, all these grid-based dungeon crawlers are kind of the same to me, so playing this doesn't really feel like a ripoff to me. They are all pretty similar. However, in the genre of grid-based dungeon crawlers, i gotta say this is probably one of the worst, if not the worst. For two big reasons; first off, the "no retreat" mechanic. If an enemy is adjacent to you, and you move away, you take a huge damage hit (in the beginning of the game, a devastatingly huge damage hit) if you move. This takes a prime mechanic out of the game; you can't really move around and avoid getting hit or as a ranged attack strategy. Some of the levels have enough interior space that you can 'kite' enemies and use the arrows to whittle them down a bit (there's also a "bug" where if you get far enough away from an enemy, they'll stop chasing you but you can still hit them), but for the most part you're going to go toe-to-toe with everything and not be able to move. This makes the game into some kind of attack-button simon. You just click the different attacks on your 4 heros as they light up. There's really nothing else to it, no real strategy or anything. You can't even arrange your team in any particular way; everyone has an equal chance of getting hit by everything. If I were to play this game again, I'd probably make my team all paladins or all archers. The mage was kind of underpowered and useless, and easily smooshed given there's no way to protect them. But i'm not going to play it again :)Its actually not that hard. I played in easy, which I highly recommend because health potions are few and far between and most combat is toe-to-toe with no ability to manuver or escape. I managed to beat this game in just under 10 hours.Overall, if you like this genre of games, and this game is on sale, its worth your money. But this game brings nothing new or exciting to the genre, and in fact takes out an element that every other game has for no real reason (I guess other than the developers didn't want to implement ranged attacks for the enemies). I guess that's a tentive recommendation? For what its worth, I had fun, even if it was kind of medocre overall, so I guess that counts as a recommendation.. A nice little gem. I enjoyed my playthrough a lot. Nice (but sparse) music and atmosphere. It gets repetative for sure but that is part of the charm here.. Genre - Grid based movement RPGI grew up on Dungeon Master, Ishar, Eye of the Beholder and Bloodwych and have fond memories of these games. I do appreciate the more open worlded RPGs of today but I will still occasionally go back to retro style games. I played through Legend of Grimrock 1,2 and Ruzar recently and enjoyed them all.Okay so this game plays a bit different to other games in the genre. You have a party of characters but can't position them. They all stand in a row of 4. Monster attacks will AOE attempt to hit all of them but damage is concentrated on your melee fighters. Also you can't dance around the monsters to avoid damage as you will take flee damage. Once you get used to the mechanics the combat is quite satisfying. You have bows, magic and the usual melee weapons to use. You can also find various armour pieces that will boost your stats sligtly. You may need to sleep after every fight though especially if lacking a priest class.I managed to solve most of the puzzles with no help. This means that none were too obtuse and the few I couldn't be bothered with were not required to complete the game on normal mode.I have spoken to the devloper and given him feedback and he has been very receptive and not defensive like some. Mainly I think there is an over reliance on the Priest class, although a common issue in most RPGs It hinders the party diversity. Also you get set skills per level up not allowing any customisation. The graphics look on a par with Grimrock and the monsters look cool whilst they attempt to kill you. You can get surrrounded in a few areas, and this should be avoided if possible as these fights rarely go in your favour. For the price I think this games satisfies and look forward to the developers promised updates and hopefully a sequel.. The ergonomy of this game is terrible. I'm a huge fan of the grid-based dungeon crawler genre but Heroes of the Monkey Tavern has big issues:- keyboard controls aren't queued. This is a very typical subtle control issue: if I press "turn left" twice, the second input is discarded because the animation of the 1st action is still ongoing. This makes the most basic action (moving around) feel absolutely terrible. If you play Legend of Grimrock for 5 minutes you'll notice the difference immediately.- the whole game UI is crippled with tons of subtle issues like this one, and in the end, the game feels like it was made without any kind of attention for the core gameplay interactions: move around, attack, pick items, manage inventory. Everything feels clumsy as hell.- no drag & drop for item picking? Seriously?- no control binding. Seriously, it's 2018. QWERTY controls just don't work for ALL countries.- 2D art is "meh" at best, character faces during the intro are... x_x. Looks like most of the art was created by someone who can barely draw. May sound rude, but it is the way it feels.. When it was all said and done, I'd consider it a nice little adventure. If you are new to dungeon crawlers, you could do far worse than starting with "Heroes of the Monkey Tavern". The game is very thin on roleplaying. You don't get to name your characters, portraits are limited, and the characters serve no function but to fight. There is little in the way of story...you enter the tower, work your way to the top , get the treasure, and it's over in approximately six hours. I think the $7.99 asking price is still fair, as it's content is solid and fun. I played on the normal mode, died a few times and had to reload saves. Nothing that was too difficult, the battle mechanics, traps, and puzzles are all adequate for younger players or newbies of the genre. The game is a good stepping stone to more difficult entries in the genre like Grimrock, Might and Magic, and Wizardry. Again, it's a worthy buy...just know you're not getting into a deep RPG experience here. Just a short, fun, basic adventure!
